Paul Schell

Legacy code that keeps running.

I maintain and modernise Symfony projects that nobody else wants to touch. Step by step, without a big-bang rewrite.

The road from Symfony 2 to today

Click through the LTS versions to see what a typical upgrade involves.

Typical tasks

  • Flex and the new directory layout (src/, config/, public/)
  • Configuration through environment variables
  • Raise the PHP version

My approach

Modernise structure and tooling without touching the business logic.

What I do for you

Maintenance and support

Bug fixes, security updates and small enhancements for existing Symfony applications. Reliable, with clear documentation.

Upgrades and migration

From old Symfony and PHP versions to current LTS releases, in small, testable steps.

Code audit and consulting

I review your project and tell you honestly where the risks are. If you like, I also advise on code questions and technical search engine optimisation.

New features in Symfony

New functionality, APIs and integrations that fit cleanly into the existing codebase.

The person behind the code

I hold a degree in computer science and have worked in IT for more than 15 years. I started in frontend development and then moved to the backend, with PHP as my focus.

I spent four years at a geoinformatics company. Currently I look after a publishing management system, an ERP for the publishing industry that runs as a SaaS application. I am responsible for the entire application: maintenance, new features and bug fixing are part of everyday work.

It is exactly this experience with a grown, productive application that I bring to your projects.

From practice

Ongoing

Publishing management software (ERP, SaaS)

Looking after a productive SaaS application for the publishing industry. I am responsible for the entire application: maintenance, new features and bug fixing in live operation.

Result: an application that runs reliably and keeps evolving.

Consulting

An agency's website

Consulting on code and search engine optimisation. Questions were answered on the spot, and we implemented the proposed improvements together.

Result: better visibility on Google.

How I approach legacy projects

  1. Getting to know each other

We clarify goals, budget and pitfalls. I read into the code before I change anything.

  2. Assessment

Versions, dependencies, tests, deployment: you get a short, prioritised overview.

  3. Securing

Before refactoring I build a safety net: tests around critical paths, static analysis, a reproducible environment.

  4. Modernising step by step

Small changes that can go live at any time. No standstill, no big bang.

  5. Ongoing support

If you like, I stay on as your go-to person for updates, bugs and further development.

Working together

Currently available

I am available full time right now and can start on a project at short notice.

Remote from Mauritius

I work exclusively remotely. Mauritius is in the UTC+4 time zone, which is 2 to 3 hours ahead of Germany depending on the season.

Ownership of the whole

I am used to taking full responsibility for a running application, not just working through individual tickets.

Clear agreements

We settle scope, effort and availability up front so you know what to expect.
